The Cebu Rectum Scandal is one of the major topics in the Philippines today. Basically, it show a video of a group of doctors and nurses performing an operation on a homosexual patient with a Black Suede Body Canister in his rectum.

As if it is not bad enough that they decided to put it on video, they also laughed about what they were able to extract from the patient. I was able to watch the video and see how the doctor proudly waved the canister in the air and how the other people in the room laughed as if they saw a circus act.

As a student nurse here in the Philippines, I became bothered because of many things. First, I am a student nurse and even I know how to value any patient’s right to full disclosure. That is the first thing that they teach you before you study any major subject in BS Nursing. I also thought of what the world would think of any Filipino who is a member of any medical field. Of course they would arrive at an assumption that all Filipinos are that unprofessional and stupid. Also, since I already handle patients, I felt anger. The whole medical team has probably more years of experience than I do but even I know better that to put any procedure or anything to do with a patient on video. Its just utterly distasteful.

Now, it is all over the news, not only nationally but also internationally as well. Even if your job has nothing to do with health, you would feel angry at what the medical staff did to the poor patient. No human deserves to be treated like that and the patient being gay does not change that in any way. It doesn’t mean that the patient is gay that they have the right to do what they did. They should have known better. What would they do if the same thing happened to a person that they value? What would they do then?

Right now, there is nothing that I can do but to watch as the trial unfold and the medical staff and everyone in the room to be prosecuted. I must admit that I have a very strong opinion on this matter. If I was the judge, I would sentence them to life imprisonment because what they did changed the poor man’s life forever. Whatever they do, the video will forever be on the Internet and can be viewed by any body at any time. For that alone, they already deserve life imprisonment.

I could only hope that the international health society does not forget that there are many talented health care professionals in the Philippines. They should not let this tarnish their idea of the Filipino medical team members. They should not forget that this can happen to any country because in a bunch of good tomatoes, there are always rotten ones. They should not forget that many doctors and nurses have been giving proper health care services in different countries for more than a decade now. The outstanding excellent service that the Filipino health care team have been providing over the years in other countries should not be forgotten due to the work of these immature and totally stupid group of doctors and nurses.

This is extremely sad because the docs and the nurses have violated their ethics. I dunno abt other countries, but here in India, they have to take an oath when they get their medical and nursing degrees that they would serve mankind in the best possible manner that they can and uphold the human life and dignity as sacred. Just because the man was gay doesn't make him a subject of such rebuke. I am sure that the authorities will take stern action if they haven't taken already.

This is simply sick. The doctors and the nurses who did this proved that they are the perverts and not the poor gay guy who faced a medical situation. I agree with you that they must be handed the severest sentence as permitted by law.

Was the guy a fool to have let someone enter a canister in his rectum? Was this self-inflicted or happened in a sexual act with another gay? It may be possible that some homophobics did that to him just because he was a gay. In any case, the medicos who robbed him of his dignity must be brought to book and the judges should set an example that such crimes cannot be tolerated at any cost.

I can understand your fears as you are a nursing student yourself. Don't worry, nothing will happen to the reputation of Filipino medical professionals. Perverts are in every society and Philippines is not an exception. It's just like, if a tourist gets raped and murdered as it happened in India recently, the whole country doesn't suddenly become unsafe for foreign tourists.

This is one of the worst medical scandals I have come across. I have come across doctors killing people for highs, I have come across racketeering in human organs, I have come across doctors performing high-risk illegal abortions, leaving surgical instruments inside patients' bodies etc., but this is unmatched. Not only the doctors performing the operation chose to make mockery of the patient's sorry and embarrassing situation, they went on to take videos and publish it on the net. This is extreme and must be treated as such.

What's the big fuss about it? Philippines is a predominantly Catholic country and homosexuality is an anti-social behavior and taboo. I don't blame the doctors for being so insensitive in this matter. It is the way they were brought up and thought from their homes through schools that homosexuality is a sin. They were just showing the world that see what happens if you are a gay. You can end up being stuffed with a canister!

One must thank that the man survived. Imagine such a situation happening in Iran. The man would have been hauled to the city square, lashed in public and then hanged from a crane even with the can in his ass. At least the doctors saved his life and his ass. It would now be interesting to see how they save their asses now. LOL

it makes me so sad that there are such insensitive people on this earth. a few days back i was almost in tears to read how a poor dog was tied up in a tree and left to die slowly for days. this one comes right on the top of the list of emotional barbarism.

SHIT!

Ya, now that it happened and now that the blokes who did that would end up in jail they would offer quite a few opportunities to the fellow inmates do to them exactly the same thing that the guy got himself into. Would be nice if someone manages to bust their arses. Bastards deserve that.

Do they allow video cams and internet in Philippines jails? That would have been poetic justice for them. BTW their medical degrees are pretty much fried, ain't so? Degrees gone and a long jail term is pretty decent for those bastards. Their lives are ruined now.

Philippines has very good medical colleges. Many students from foreign countries go their to study because it is cheap and it is outstanding. One of my second cousins completed his medical degree from there in 2004. I don't think this particular scandal will harm the reputation of Philippines medical services greatly. The judges must set an example by punishing them hard.

The other hospital staff must have been aware what's going on in the OT. One must investigate how the video got posted on the Web. Well, doctors and nurses especially the trauma center ones are particularly stressed. They do a few things every now and then for recreation but keep it very private. Men are not machines after all. The guy who did posted the video must be held guilty and the rest should be let off with milder punishments. We must remember that after all they saved the man's life by successfully performing a very complicated operation. If they were homophobic as someone suggested here, they could have nicely killed the guy without getting suspicious.

they bring shame to our country and they must be jailed for life. i completely agree with the writer. just imagine what the world is thinking of us and our medical system. this is a huge damage. do not let them go please. many Filipino workers work in other countries. i hope they are not targeted because of this by gay gangs.

Thank you for commenting. I just have to say, your personal belief should not get in the way of making a sound judgement. No matter what your religion is, when you pledge to be a member of a medical team, your personal belief should not interfere. If you cannot do that, then might as well resign or quit.
